Jesse Harris may be best known as the writer of Norah Jones’s biggest hit, “Don’t Know Why,” but he’s never been one to rest on his laurels or get stuck in a stylistic rut. Instead of sticking to the mellow folk-jazz feel of that song on his WATCHING THE SKY album, he pursues a more idiosyncratic sound. Most of the tunes are based around his banjo, for one thing, which he plays in a pointedly non-traditional style, and the songs are fleshed out with unpredictable, angular arrangements featuring everything from cello to marimba, maintaining a fresh, distinctive vibe throughout.
