In a 1987 interview, Miles Davis sat down with a German journalist and discussed the differences between black and white jazz musicians. As expected, he had very strong opinions on the matter of white phrasing versus black phrasing while commenting on the merits of such players as Keith Jarrett, David Sanborn, Joe Wilder and others. And then the Prince of Darkness said, Theres a good trumpeter player in George Gruntzs band I heard at the Berlin Jazz Festival. He can play his ass off. If I was picking a trumpet player, I would pick him. Wynton (Marsalis) I wouldnt pick, Freddie (Hubbard) I wouldnt pick, and Woody Shaw is dead. So I would pick him. He can play anything. I like him. Miles was talking about Franco Ambrosetti, the Swiss trumpeter and industrialist who celebrates his 77th birthday this December. Still swinging after all these years, Ambrosetti is thrilled by his latest recording, Long Waves, his 28th as a leader overall and second for the Swiss-based Unit Records label founded by Swiss guitarist Harald Haerter. Featuring guitarist John Scofield, pianist Uri Caine, bassist Scott Colley and drumming great Jack DeJohnette, this all-star session is yet another crowning achievement in Ambrosettis long and storied career. We are playing together, listening and reacting, said the trumpeter-flugelhornist-composer of this stellar session recorded in New York City in January of 2019. Its not that everybody is playing his own thing, no. Its more like a constant dialogue. Bill Milkowski
