David MacKay is a former San Francisco Bay Area bassist who lives in the Muscle Shoals area of Alabama. He grew up in the Bay Area in the 60’s and was raised in the school of “music exploration”. He was one of the founding members of the Tazmanian Devils, the Bay Area reggae/ rock band. In the late 70’s he played with Michael Nesmith and was the bassist on Nesmith’s Grammy winning video “Elephant Parts”. In 1980 he met his future wife Donna Jean Godchaux (Grateful Dead) while playing in the Heart of Gold Band with Donna, guitarist Steve Kimmock, drummer Greg Anton and pianist/film composer Mark Adler. In the mid 90’s David and Donna moved to the Muscle Shoals area where they continue to reside and work musically. The latest incarnation of their band is the Donna Jean Godchaux Band featuring guitarist Jeff Mattson (Dark Star Orchestra). MacKay works as a studio bassist and is also involved with many of the the Shoal’s bands including the Fiddleworms and the Mojo Mixers. His album “Blue Undertones” is a collection of original jazz and blues tinged instrumentals that stay true to the Muscle Shoals feel. It is very much a marriage of the Bay Area meets Muscle Shoals. The album is built around MacKay’s melodic bass playing and features major contributions from some of the Shoal’s finest musicians: guitarist Rob Malone (Fiddleworms, Drive By Truckers), Will McFarlane (Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Bonnie Raitt), drummer Pete Lavezzoli (Melvin Seals), and keyboardist Freeman White (Donna Jean Godchaux). Charles Rose (Muscle Shoals Horn Section) wrote horn arrangements and played trombone. Doug Moffett (woodwinds) and Steve Herman (trumpet) solo throughout. One song, “Dub-ble Up” features Taz members David Carlson, Dennis Hogan, and Barry Lowenthal. The album is co-produced by MacKay and Grammy winner Jimmy Nutt.
